I checked the net and found that BT say I can get up to 5mb d/l speed. I check my router it read 2.2mb. I worte to both BT and my router manufacturer. I received a response from BT which summarised I should check this check that etc, which being computer compentent I had already done. I responded attaching my manufacture response (tech info regarding incoming feeds). Bt responded with, they tested my line I can receive 4.5mb, I could upgrade my service to 8mb(new package) for extra money and with that I could receive up to 4.5mb, still saying my lag was an internal prob.
So lets think, BT say I can currently receive 4.5mb (max) for the same money (if I find an internal cure to my prob) or I can pay extra for this new wonder package, to which I pay to receive up to 8mb. However my current lines only accept 4.5mb (externally) so I will not get 8mb, besides my internal will only give me 2.2mb. I have asked for an engineer to check, did they respond...no, where did customer service go

Don't waste the cash, It's very likely that the problem is not interneal, but a total bandwidth on your node problem, which they will never admit to.

they aren't too good when it comes to problems like this. i still am arguing over why i am paying for the 8MB service which feel like dial up between 4-7pm. My mobile phone connects faster duing these peak times. I also have intermittent problem with my wireless connection and all they can repeatadly do it tell me to check this and that. they treat me like a fool even though i am more computer literate than most of the engineers. I actually used to work for them when they had home highway (what a con that was. I am trying to see if I have an actual argument over the speed but all their paper work stated that any speed given is a hypothetical maximum speed.
saying that, they are better than most providers if a little expensive

A number of things to consider for this. Your speeds will be greatly affected by internal wiring. Have you tested your speeds from the Master BT socket with only the router plugged in? Have you tried setting your MTU speed for both the router and PC?

with bit torrent it extremely rear to find torrents that's giving you the full 5.0mb download speed it all depends on the amount of seeders who are sharing the file, from the way your describing it your finding torrents with not enough seeder ratio and are confusing it with your download speed. If that's not the case i would recommend you take a C-net Bandwidth Meter speed test, and report back to us what speeds you get.

well i have paid for the up to 8 mb and they say my phone can take it , but when my hub is any more than 6 foot away from pc my signal drops and my speed ranges from 2.2 - 5.5 . the ended up sending me another hub but that nade no difference i had asked for someone to come out ,but they said they couldn` t do that , i think its a disgrace also

So what's your point?

Do yourself a favor and get a better router that can support higher speeds.
