I just watched it online. It was horrible. He should really be ashamed of himself. It was like he lost his mind and went totally off the deep end. I think he will have a hard time finding work again.

Racism is about ignorance and discrimination and it's about one race thinking it's superior to another. Though Richards' comments were certainly racist, I don't know that I would be so quick to say that he as a person is a racist because I think his comments were more about an irrational reaction to his perceived loss of control than anything else. A skilled comedian knows how to take a heckler's remarks and either ignore them or respond to them in a way that adds to the comedic experience instead of detracting from it. Richards obviously doesn't possess those skills, or if he does, then there must be some reason they were so lacking on the night in question (e.g., drugs, an extremely emotional event occurred in his personal life, etc.). Either way, it doesn't excuse what he said. There's no excuse for it. If you're a professional performer, then you need to have the requisite skills or you don't belong on stage. But I don't think it makes sense to react to rage with rage either (i.e., take a look at the Middle East if you need evidence of the futility of that strategy). If anything good can come out of this incident, and I think it can, then I think it would be for people to use this event to shine a light on the topic of race relations in this country. We've made great strides as a nation in this area, especially when you look at the fact that genocidal forces are alive and well in so many other countries around the world (e.g., in Africa, Asia, etc.). But if slavery in the US was a shotgun blast to our gut, then every time something like this happens, we discover that we still haven't removed all those hurtful pellets, and we discover that those wounds still haven't completely healed. So before the spotlight moves on to the next hot issue of the moment, I would urge people to use this time as an opportunity to reflect and think critically and have dialogue with each other, no matter how uncomfortable, about this very emotional topic.

I think it's something we'll see more and more of now that portable video cameras are in people's phones. Bad behavior is almost impossible for a celebrity to hide, and celebrities are human just like everyone else. They'll have a moment of weakness and say what they really think, or say something they don't really think in anger (and honestly, do we really know if he's a racist at heart, or just stupid/angry?).
We pay too much attention to celebrities, whether they're saying something we agree with, or something we disagree with. Artistic types are generally narcissistic - imagine if you will going through life with a need for people to look at you all the time, you'd go nuts nuts nuts, or get into show business. It's typically a benign sort of mental disease.
Still and all, at least he's not a lawyer.

I just saw it last night. I am so completely disgusted with him! I can't believe what I saw & heard! I was so enraged; I could feel the adrenaline start to flow! He is a disgrace to the human race! I'm so glad you asked this question, because I was contemplating asking as well. My perception of him is forever changed.
Lil' Buddha, you really made an extremely valid point! I hope people take your advice & stop to think about this event; I sure have.

A career ender for sure. His remarks on Letterman were not helpful at all. He should have released a written apology (proofed by publicists and lawyers) instead. He clearly should not be given open mike time. He is a loose cannon with some serious rage and racsim issues. My guess is we will hear about him entering some rehab facility soon.

He's almost beyond apology! What he did was wrong and although he knows it, it should have never happened! Being in the business he's in he should know a thing or two. First being a comedian means you'll get teased by members of the audience and he fed them fuel for their fire! He should have known better I'll be interested to see how many accept his heartfelt apology.

it's sad but someone should of throw those fuc*ers out before it got to that point. Only in the entertainment world can you be heckled for doing your job, lets say for example that those two guys were Sales professionals do you think they would like someone scream, YOU suck you couldn;t sell a cane to a blind person and blah blah blah...!! Exactly, that's not right so as far as I'm concerned where or not he's racist, he stood up for him self.

He should not apologize to anyone. If the situation was reversed it would not have even made news.
I'm sick of all these people with their political correctness and racial sensitivity. Just get over it world, they were only words !!
