Darien:
To be successful in your own business it must be a venture with which you are experienced or very interested in.
You must have a total committment to success, a firm, written business plan, and lots of financing behind you to keep you alive during the formative years.
You must be able to pick yourself up when you fall down, learn from your mistakes and have a mentor if possible to help you through the rough passages.
If you're selling product you must have a reliable source and in sufficient quantity if your marketing is successful.
You also need a marketing plan, a vehicle from which to market (web site, store front, advertising, word of mouth etc.)
Unless you hit on a splendiferous product or service which becomes an overnight hit be prepared for 90-hour work weeks, lots of sweat and tears, and really hard work.
The rewards can be stupendous so give it a lot of thought and planning (consider ALL alternatives) and go for it!

A successful/profitable business, and the only way that could happen is, that your Idea becomes a Reality and the Public Wants It. Hard question to answer - all supposition!

Real estate investing aka "flipping houses". Don't open a restaurant or a retail store. Those usually fail.
