Psychics are a sham. As you pointed out they would be winning the lottery, predicting events like 9/11 etc. Psychics like John Edwards and Sylvia Browne use a method called cold reading to get a subject to behave a certain way or to think the reader has some sort of wonderful ability. Very manipulative.
They will use statements that are general and ambiguous and apply to just about everyone. If you are the subject and looking for answers you will believe what you are told applies to you only.
We quickly forget the inaccuracies of a reading and focus on the bits we feel are correct. The reader is counting on this.
Look at the statement below from astologist Sidney Omarr:
"People close to you have been taking advantage of you. Your basic honesty has been getting in your way. Many opportunities that you have had offered to you in the past have had to be surrendered because you refuse to take advantage of others. You like to read books and articles to improve your mind. In fact, if you're not already in some sort of personal service business, you should be. You have an infinite capacity for understanding people's problems and you can sympathize with them. But you are firm when confronted with obstinacy or outright stupidity. Law enforcement would be another field you understand. Your sense of justice is quite strong."
That applies to just about all of us to some degree but if he was to give you this reading personally some of us would believe he has some sort of mystical ability.
Not only is it vague it is bull s**t.

While I am extremely skeptical of those who publicly claim to be psychic, humans use about 10-12% of the brain abilities, I do think it is possible some could have the ability to sense things other cannot pick up. I'd like to think that it may be possible. Those who advertise rarely make personal claims, instead, they depend on others to spread the word of their success rates. These, I have a difficult time believing are on the level. Here in Florida, there is a small town near Lakeland that is said to be a center of mysticism and supposed strange happenings have occurred there. I'm still skeptical but can't rule out the possibility that some of us may have abilities that cannot be measured using modern day methods. We just haven't enough information or knowledge yet.

I don't really think psychics are for real anymore, I think in the older days they did exist though, not to go against your religion or anything I don't know what you believe but in the Bible many "prophets" predicted the future and what they saw happened exactly as they predicted so I would say that God has sends signals to some people and they pick them up, therefore they are called a psychic.

I know we are real and the reason we can not win in lotteries is because we will get bad luck back in threefold. So if I win the lottery three things will happen and I am NOT willing to lose my family for the sake of money!
I can see why you guys do not believe the same reason why others do not believe in ghosts it is one of those things I believe it when I see it!

You're right! I know that if I had the power to know the future I would sure as hell win the lottery a few times. They are just scamming you for your money. I have heard stories, but hey who knows?

That is very true. If they are psychic they would be able to know more things than just other people. I think that those people have learned how to read people very well; enough to know what other people want to hear, but, personally, I dont believe in psychics.

I don't believe in the ones that can "predict" the future, but I do think that some can talk to people on the "other side" like John Edward who had that show, Crossing Over.

It is a form of theft. Deceive people and then take their money. In my opinion psychics are criminals preying on the ignorant.
