1) Their reason for living is in opposition to your own.

This is the cause of more violence and hatred than any other reason. The Middle East is rife with oppositional thought-- Judaism vs. the predominance of Islam, Economics vs. Wahabist thought, etc. If one side cannot back down and the ideas cannot be reconciled, then hate & violence will erupt. Tolerance is, unfortunately, not a permanent solution.

2) The expectations you have of someone have been breached.

This is what occurs when you find that your wife/husband/GF/BF has lied/cheated/run up their credit cards/etc. Your expectations of honesty/mongamy/(insert expectation here) have been violated. This is also why businesses go to great lengths to spell out their expectations in a contract prior to business transactions. It prevents ethical people from creating a breach of trust and makes adherence to expectations easier for both parties.

3) You are intentionally harmed by someone.

This can be financially, physically, or emotionally. This one is probably just a corollary of #2, but if done persistently, or in an extreme manner, you can grow to hate the harmer.

An example of persistent harm might include your older brother punching you in the arm every day when you were a kid. You might hate him as an adult. You would likely not hate an older brother who punched you once as a kid. On the other hand, in the extreme, you would definitely despise a rapist, or someone who bilked you out of a fortune-- even if it occurred just once.

4) Third party (Ingroup) hate.

Third party hatred can occur when you see or here someone else, with whom you sympathise, go through any of the above three items. This occurs for example, due to national allegiance, esprit de corps, etc. For example, if a gang member is brutalized by a new gang in town, even if no other members of the beat member's gang were hurt, they will now hate the new gang. Also, this is why the famous Appalachian family feud was initiated between the Hatfields and McCoys.

5) Disenfranchisement or Envy.

What does this mean? It means that while no actual wrong has occurred to you, that you do not feel part like you are part of something that everyone else is part of. While I'm sure that at least some world events have been initiated due to dissenfranchisement, the best example is a girl in high school that hates all cheerleaders, not because she has interacted with them, but because she is not part of their group.

It's unhealthy to hate anyone. It'll only eat you up inside and make you jaded and bitter. It's far better to make up your own mind as to your own principles and morals - what do you think that being a good person entails? Find your own moral centre, and if others don't share those principles or behave in a way you approve of, that's their decision and their actions will bring their own inherant consequences to them. Concentrate on yourself and try not to get hung up on how others behave. You can only make your own choices. There are a lot of selfish petty idiots out there, but there are also some lovely, giving wise worthwhile people. Stick to those people, and be positive, otherwise you'll get stuck in a negative rut which will bring those who care about you down as well.

For me, there are no reasons to hate anyone. I might hate what they do, how they behave, avoid them, not have them in my life, etc., but I don't hate them. There are a number of reasons to not hate, the most significant being that if you hate someone you are giving that person a certain amount of power and control over you. I refuse to give anyone that kind of influence in my life.

There isn't really a reason to hate someone. Hate politics, hate racists, hate war, hate homelessness, hate crooked people, hate hunger and poverty, but don't hate just on color, sex, creed or religion. Hate for a cause; hate because its something wrong and you KNOW that it needs to be made right. And after you've done enough hating get up and change it, do something about it so then one day what you hated you will grow to love.

I don't think there are legitimate reasons to have hate for anyone. It doesn't matter what they did or how they feel or behave. Everyone has their reasons for how they are. I just feel sad that they have not found a way to be happy within themselves so that they don't have to go and add to someone else's misery.

Why should you hate anyone? When you do, it is yourself that suffers, because of the rage inside you, you can never be at peace with yourself. And you can never be happy.
