Most homeless people are drug addicts and alcoholics. To prove this the next time one asks you for money, ask them what they want it for. Most will tell you food. If you offer to buy them food(which I do) more often than not, they'll just either insist on the money or walk away. Sometimes they'll accept the food and then still want money.
I was homeless at one time as a result of addiction. Most normal people dont realize that in most major cities there are soup kitchens, homeless shelters, churches etc. that will feed, clothe and house the homeless for no charge. They even give out free bus passes to assist in the job hunt. Most have the stipulation of being sober/not high, proof of looking for work, or sitting through a church service or the like.
For me that was 5 years ago and since then I now work full time, own a $280,000 home, 2 vehicles, and go to school part time. The help is there for the homeless IF they are willing to change. I always point them in those directions. Grace is an undeserved gift. There really is no excuse other than not wanting to give up what is keeping them where they are.

I think in general a misconception is widely accepted that these are mostly people who are just down on their luck. When in fact the vast majority are nuts who need medication or institutionalization to live like normal people.

However, I'm not sure what to do about it. I'm inclined as long as they aren't dangerous, to just leave them alone. They are living as they want.
