If you are in this situation at present... call your doctor and ask. The doctor should know that things have gotten started anyway. Try to stay calm, you knew this day would come, no need for panic.

Please do not go by how long the contractions are. Once the contractions are 5 minutes apart for like 20 mins, then it's time to go to the hospital. Every pregnancy is different so do not go by how many contractions she is having. Some women have hard contractions from the very first one. Time the contractions and once they are what I have stated above, take your wife to the hospital. Of course, you will have to call the doctor while this is going on as well. Make sure you don't leave the wife behind and congratulations on your precious gift. Good luck and GOD bless.

We also had a 45min drive to the hospital and had the same concerns. My doc suggested waiting until contractions were steady at 6 mins apart for an hour and then heading in. Of course things can move at their own pace, but that may be a number to start with. We made it to the hospital around 2:30am and our little girl was born at 11:00am, and I pushed for about 45 mins. Good luck & congrats!

When the contractions are regular and have a pattern....time them. When they get to be very regular and are about 5-8 minutes apart...it's time! HOWEVER>>>> If you have such a long drive, you may want to go sooner! Call her doctor and they will tell you what to do! Even if you go to the hospital too soon, chances are they won't send you back home if she is progressing. Also, if this is your first baby....I would go soon. Being unfamiliar with the feeling and sensations of labor may cause you to misjudge your timing!
Good luck and Congrats!

I would say since u r 45 miles away from the hospital go when they are about 6 minutes apart! Then drive like crazy! A first birth normally takes alot longer then if she has had other kids! GOD I was in labor almost 48 hrs with my son!!!!!

My contractions were irregular, so I didnt want to go to the Hospital, but the pain got intense and my mother made me go, turns out I was 5 cms and at 0 station, its up to her what feels right. If she cant take the pain and is worried, go....if she can take the pain (up to a point) stay and labor a while at home.

If its the first baby wait until they are very consistent like 5 or 6minutes apart for about an hour or so. First baby's usually take about 10 - 12 hours of labor. You just don't want to get there too soon they may make you go home.

sorry to burst your bubble...but it is not the number of contractions but the time between them that is your marker you should worry with. when they are as narrow as ten minutes apart you should consider scooting because of the time needed to get there if you were closer to the docs i would say waiting till they were five minutes apart
