Hi. I am from Ohio too, and I know you can make copies of your keys as long as they don't say Do Not Duplicate on them.
They will change your lock when your lease is over anyways.

it's not illegal to make copies of apt. keys, it's illegal to have someone living with you that's not on the lease. it's illegal to make copies of post office box keys, but apartments, no. you have the right to give a family member or close friend a key in the event of an emergency.

I think it's illegal to make copies of apartment keys in any city, or state, it is here in portland, Oregon.

As long as you talk to your landlord about it and he/she says it is fine then no it is not illegal, also if you do make a copy and you decide to move out you have to be sure that you give that key up as well as the original.

Check with your apartment complex office - sometimes they make copies for you free of charge. My complex did and I had 3 copies made for my family to have.
