What kinds of things can I do for him to help him? he smokes a pack a day, and has for over ten years. I know he will have a hard time, but I want to be there for him and help him. Any tips?

The only way I can think of is not to get on his last nerve, because when people try and quit smoking (ESPECIALLY after smoking a pack a day for the past 10 years) they tend to get very nasty when they haven't had a cigarette in a while. Just be supportive and don't argue too much with him even though the odds of him being an @$$hole will be pretty high.

Just be supportive and help him find distractions. Remember that if he gets really irritable that it is nothing personal against you - it goes with the territory! It will pass eventually. It's part of getting over the addiction to nicotine. If he gets really nasty, just leave him alone for awhile. Don't hold it against him or make him feel guilty if he lashes out because it may make him want to start smoking again. Just be patient!
