I try to make it a point to smile at people, and to extend small courtesies to others (you wouldn't believe how surprised people are when you do something nice for no apparent reason!). When I go to the grocery store, I get a cart out of the group already on the parking lot - one less for somebody to have to push back to the store, and I'm going to need one anyway. If I see someone who needs help, I offer if I am able to be of assistance. Not long ago, a woman was in a the parking lot of a business I went to, and she was trying to re-wrap a sprained wrist by herself, and I offered to help. I recycle as much as I can; when I go camping, I try to follow the practice of "take only pictures; leave only footprints." I also try to leave my campsite even cleaner than I found it, if possible. I work with a couple of different youth groups, because I think too many young people don't feel they are valued as they are growing up. I answer questions here on Yahoo answers because people need to know things, and I'm fortunate enough to have a bit of a gift for retaining knowlege and communicating it. I firmly believe it's the little things we do every day that make the whole world a better place, and that's all the reason I need!

I think the little things DO matter. I try to be aware of the people around me - whether I know them or not - to see if they need anything. An elderly neighbor whose lawn looks overgrown is usually ill and grateful to have it mown for them. A mother with a new baby usually appreciates it if you bring a meal or two to her house when she returns from the hospital so she doesn't have to cook. If you just keep your eyes open, there are lots of little things you can do that will help someone, make their day better.

If we ALL did this....well, wouldn't it just be a nicer place to live?

Become a Chemist or Biologist and find a sure fire cure for some virulent disease. Or become a diplomat and talk warring nations into win-win compromises. Write the great American novel and inspire the world. But, for most of us, the best you can do is become a responsible, involved citizen and raise well mannered, responsible involved kids.

by being a good citizen - don't litter and smoke, recycle, volunteer, or just simply be nice to everyone that you come in contact with. your small gesture might make somebody's day!
i'm also studying education, so hopefully I'll be able to make a difference and make the world a better place through teaching!

I believe in "paying it forward" (as the movie so beautifully put it) and have done so for most of my adult life.

Someone helped me many, many years ago and only asked in return that I help another. When opportunity has presented itself I have remembered that kindness and tried to pass it on, asking the same of those I have helped.
I can only hope this has worked exponentially and actually made a difference in some small way.

I raise my child to be a kind and compassionate person. I am imparting to him morals and values that hopefully he can pass on to his children.
