It's a very good question and thank you for asking it.
Personally, I feel completely helpless in the face of adversity. It feels like we can do nothing to change the world, and yet it only takes one action to do something useful or worthwhile ... and then a million other people to do the same ... and then another million to follow suit and hey presto, we really CAN change the world. It can be as simple as not using plastic bags in a supermarket - if you usually use 10 a week for your groceries and you start to use 'bags for life' then that is 520 a year saved. If a million people all did that .... if ten million all did that ....
But actually, my real contribution to life is to make art that the viewers can participate in. This gives them an experience that challenges the way they think and hopefully changes them. I know I have been changed in the same way and that is why I changed my entire life to study art. In the process, I can recycle my own experiences and pass them onto others. By helping people to extend their thoughts and develop their minds, perhaps people will start thinking differently and acting differently. Idealist? Yes. But that is what artists are!

I live in it for living in this world is doing a great deal in its own right. Whether this living is good or bad depends upon individual taste. And whether my living in this world helps or not is open to speculations but this is simply the best I can do. If this is not helping then I am not sorry and I will not be apologetic for having yet another person feeling sorry about himself definitely won’t help. All I would say that I will keep this is my mind and contemplate upon it soon as I can. On the other hand if my inhabiting this world really helps, if it really makes a difference then that's exactly what I mean. I a also thankful to people who crowd the streets and malls of the cities of the world, and people who flock to tourists sites and airports and those who shop and sit in fancy restaurants to eat their lunches. For these are the people who act like a perspective for the picture of the world in which I am the centre character. Without all these people, places, animals and things the picture of my life would hav4 been so boring. Good!

I agree with those who have answered "Smile".
It takes so little to lift people's spirits and make them feel that life is worth living.
Too many people feel that life owes them something and that constant grouching makes them someone special, someone to be reckoned with.
We are only on this earth for a few short years and surely a kind word, a smile, a little time for others will make the world a better place.
It's a start, anyway.

you can't make it better for everyone but you can make it better for yourself.
1. don't listen too or encourage gossip
2. believe in the choices you make
3. believe in yourself
don't be afraid to smile, it really does release those happy endorphins
