If the cd has music on it it should play in Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player is a pre-installed feature in Windows.

cd-r is just the type of CD. They work just like any other CD once you have finalized the session. They are used for offline storage. So the dirs and files that you see are what is on that cd-r. In any modern operating system you do not need any special software to read a cd-r. To write to a cd-r you need special software. In modern operating systems this will be built in. For Linux use K3b, for windows you can drag and drop in explorer. In Linux Konquerer and Nautilis will also do this, Midnight commander requires a plugin to be installed. Nero I think is still the most popular burner software for windows. It is comercial though so you have to buy it. There are a couple good free burner packages that can be downloaded for windows.

To burn a cd-r you have to have a burner. Most new computers by default will at least have a cd burner, most have DVD-burners today.

Potential problems. The first is if you did not close the session when you burned the cd. A common problem, many windows burners do not by default close the session. Until you do the cd-r will not be readable in most cd drives.

Another common problem is windows doesn't do well with USB cd burners. You have to install special drivers and the burner software has to look at non-IDE devices. Many do not. So you will likely need to install a burner package that does detect and use USB devices to burn. Sonic does a good job of this. The built in windows burner in XP will not. Nero seems to have problems doing this as well.

When burning ISOs, that is disk images in almost all burner software you need to burn it as a CD image not as a data cd. If you burn it as a data CD you have burned the ISO not the image. So unless your running Linux or another Nix varient the data contained in the ISO image will not be availible. Even if you are running Nix you have to specially mount the ISO image to get at the contents. So reburn the CD using burn as image rather than data CD. If your burner software does not support this you will need to install software that does. The windows explorer burner I believe does not support this. In K3b it's under the tools option.

A CD-R should play the same way a regular CD plays. It shouldn't make any difference in a computer CD drive.

If the CDs are showing you folders, then they may not be music CDs. They may be data CDs. You can put more than just music on to a CD.
