Because they wanted to name it "Hotel California", but it didn't quite work because the hotel was in Africa and the Eagles started bitchin'.

The character of Colonel Oliver (Nick Nolte) is a fictionalized synthesis of Canadian Lt-Gen. Roméo Dallaire, Force Commander of UNAMIR, the ill-fated United Nations peacekeeping force in Rwanda, along with several other Canadian commanders. Some have complained that Dallaire is not given due credit for his role in trying to stop the violence.

It was named after the place the movie took place in, also because the hotel was the place they stayed alive
