Nicky made a great point about it being subjective!
I have known those I would consider "intellectuals" from every walk of life, with and without formal education, and they wouldn't have necessarily considered each other intellectuals.

In my opinion, gifted intellectuals have a passion for learning, the ability to put available information together in a coherent way, a good measure of the wisdom that develops through patience and the ability to communicate their thoughts in ways that others could understand.

An intellectual is a person who uses his or her intellect to work, study, reflect, speculate on, or ask and answer questions with regard to a variety of different ideas.

There are, broadly, three modern definitions at work in discussions about intellectuals. Firstly, 'intellectuals' as those deeply involved in ideas, books, the life of the mind. Secondly, and here largely arising from Marxism, 'intellectuals' as that recognizable occupational class consisting of lecturers, teachers, lawyers, journalists, and suchlike. Thirdly, cultural "intellectuals" are those of notable expertise in culture and the arts, expertise which allows them some cultural authority, and who then use that authority to speak in public on other matters.

You can tell true intellectuals from pretentious pretenders, with a few exceptions, by the way they display their names on the books they write. For example; Dr. Phil McGraw or Phil McGraw PhD., is pretentious. E. O. Wilson, with his credential in small print at the base of the back cover, is a true intellectual.

Probably people answering your question !

Very subjective term ... one 'intellectual person' in a perticular group/circle may not be so in another group and vice versa.
