You can look her up on Wikipedia as easily as I can. Basically, she's a woman pilot who thought she could fly around the world, but got lost over the Pacific Ocean, ran out of fuel, crashed into the water, died, and got eaten by the fishes. She didn't prove that the world was round: Magellan had already done that. She didn't invent the airplane: Orville and Wilbur Wright did that. She's basically remembered because she was a woman, and we live in an age where women are "pushed" (advanced in presumed importance). If a man had done what she did, he'd have been remembered only for his failure.

US Aviator of the 20's and 30's. Set many pioneering women's record for aerial achievement, including first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean solo. Highly influential in US aviation circles; a founder of The Ninety-Nines, a professional organization for women in aviation (still exists); during the 1930's til her death in '37, she was "the" female pilot (or 'aviatrix' as they were called); lost in 1937 with navigator Fred Noonan over the Pacific Ocean while attempting a round-the-world flight in a twin-engined Lockheed Electra.

I want to say she was the first female pilot but I'm not sure if that's correct. However, she was a famous pilot and she disappeared when she tried to fly around the world. Google the rest of the info you need - you can find plenty of stuff on her.
