the roots of the numerator are 5 and -1.5. So, the numerator is divisible by a-5 . if you divide the numerator, you find 2a+3

2a^2 - 7 a - 15 / a - 5

First unfoil the 2a^2 - 7 a - 15 if possible

[(2a +3)(a-5)] / a-5

Obviously you can cancel the a-5's and you are left with
2a + 3
