I want to be able to record daily, over and over again, erasing once I've seen the shows, without having to buy DVD discs that can't be rerecorded over and over again nor do I want to pay a monthly fee. I want to be able to record like on video tapes without managing multiple video tapes. Is there any TV recorder that does that? If so, what should I be buying?

Pick up a tv tuner card and run your signal through your pc and then to your tv.
This will allow you to save programs to your harddrive and delete as needed similar to tivo with no monthly fees. only downside is the cables from the pc to the tv.
decent card will run you around 100 bucks or so.

TiVO is generically a Digital Video Recorder or DVR. Almost all DVR's have a high capacity hard disk drive. If you don't want TiVO check out Pioneer. They make a combo DVR-DVR-R. It functions similar to a VCR, you set the timer to record a specific channel and set the date and time. You have a choice of recording quality. Once you watch a show you can delete or if you choose, you can transfer it to DVD-R for a more permanent recording.

I don't know the brands, but you can buy DVD recorders that have a hard drive. They are designed that way so you can decide if you want to burn the show on disc, rearrange the viewing order, make a DVD of all one show etc. Since it has the hard drive, you don't actually need any DVD-Rs. No monthly fee, except of course your cable or satellite bill.
