I am currently ten weeks pregnant and I will go in for my first ultrasound the end of this month. I am very concerned that I may be having twins. I am not sure if I am just reading too much into this, but by ten weeks I truly look pregnant and have already had to buy maternity clothes. I feel like I am very large for this time period and I was thin before pregnancy-but not super thin. Another thing that I have read about the possibility of twins is having your symptons on the severe side! Thankfully I have not had any sickness, but my downfall is sleepiness...and it is ridiculous! I sleep about 8-10 hours every night, I have to spend my lunch hour napping and then as soon as I get home from work I fall asleep again until about 8:00 pm. I am just wondering, anyone who has had twins, what were your symptons and at what stage did the ultrasound pick it up.

Ultrasound will detect twins very early. I was pregnant with mutiples (3) last December and they were detected at 8 weeks. Unfortunately, I miscarried at 15 weeks. However, of course it is possible that you are having twins, but don't read into it too much just based on your symptoms. Wether you are having one baby, twins or even triplets your tummy at 10 weeks is caused more by fluid retention, bowels being distended and gas. At 10 weeks, the embryo is only about an inch long...so even if there were more than one, they are still not big enough to cause your belly bump.
All women carry differently, some show early, some don't even show until 5-6 months. As far as the other symptoms...Thank god that you don't have morning sickness, and when it comes to pregnancy....being tired is probably the biggest complaint. Your body is changing and will continue to for the next few months...just listen to it and make sure you take care of yourself!
Good luck and Congratulations!

I have 10 month old identical twins. Showing early does not mean you are having twins. I didn't show until I was in my 13th week. And even my doctor didn't think I was having twins until I had an ultrasound at 21 weeks. My biggest twin symptom was the horrible morning sickness. (Which also happens to people who aren't having twins.)

Of course, every pregnancy does have a 1 in 250 chance of being identical twins. Identical twins are from one fertilized egg that splits through a random act of nature.

Your odds of fraternal twins (two eggs fertilized at the same time) can increase through any of the following factors:

1. If you (the female) have a family history of fraternal twins. Twins on the male's side is irrelevant because he can't make you produce two eggs.

2. The use of fertility drugs by the female.

3. The older you are the more likely you are to have twins. A woman over 45 has a 17% chance of twins.

4. Twins are more common in African Americans and less common in Asians and Hispanics.

5. The more pregnancies you have the more likely you are to have twins.

IMHO I think you might be worried for no reason. Make sure you are staying well hydrated and eating well (both can help with the sleepiness). Alot of women show "early" and go on to have just one baby.

Good luck and congrats!

You sound just like me and I'm having only one. But I was putting in 10-12 hours sleep a night during the week. Plus on weekends I was taking two 1-2 hour naps a day. I showed early too, but now people are telling me that I don't look as far along as I am. But I'm measuring properly and steadily gaining weight. Good luck.

They thought i was having twins this time around as I was showing that early as well, could wear any of my old shirts as my stomach showed, also i had such bad nausia i couldn't eat and would throw up atleast 3-4 times a day, i am 35 weeks preggy with just one beautiful baby boy. Sometimes that is just how it happens, either way it will be exciting journey for you. Good luck i hop eyou get what you want. Did they tell you what your HCG levels were? that could also help determin twins or not.

Surely by now they have checked for a heartbeat. You could just be one of those women that get huge in pregnancy. Don't read too much into all of this. Just calm down and wait. At least the appointment is soon!

I had twins last year at 16, unfortunately they did not live. Anyways, my symptoms were: gaining more weight than normal, showing at just 2 months, severe morning sickness (which occured all day everyday), I had terrible pains in my stomach due to me being pregnant with twins, and I slept what seemed like all day!! Good Luck with your pregnancy!! If you are in fact pregnant with twins please take it easy!!! It is more common for you to leak amniotic fluid with twins. That is what happened to me and I had them at 5 months. Best wishes!!
