Only a limited number of people understand it. Classical dance form is like a speaking and understanding a different language. If you speak the language, you are sure to be able to understand it. Even if you don't speak, you still might be able to understand. You either understand the stories that are told, or understand some of it, or you completely don't get it. For example, I don't understand German. I don't get anything out of listening to it whatsoever. I understand some phrases in Italian. I can enjoy listening to Italian speech, even though I don't really get all the meaning. I'm fluent in English, I can listen to stories in English all day long.

I think that a lot of people expect to have fun and watch something entertaining when they go to a dance show. I love classical music and classical dance but for some people that's boring stuff and they prefer doing something else like eating out or watching a movie than to sit on a chair for an hour and a half and watch some dancers move their arms, heads, bodies and legs/feet. It's the reality even though it's sad. I also think that people who understand dance and know how hard it is and how intense the dance classes are appreciate the art of dance more especially if it's graceful and technique oriented like classical dance is. However, in order to like something you need to understand it and sometimes even live it. And not that many people learn how to dance or have a desire to.

It has to do with familiarity. People will not pay good money and spend their time to go see something they know nothing about, have no idea whether they will like it or not. Classical dance -- normally we would think ballet -- is only known to a relatively small part of the public, and there is apparently very little interest in spreading that familiarity. I think there is a certain "snob appeal" that prevents it, as well as the fact that many people simply find it dull.

Supply and Demand. Most people simply don't enjoy watching others dance. I personally prefer to dance myself, even if I'm not classically trained. I enjoy dancing, but am bored by watching others.

Because not everybody can appreciate classical dances. There should be more awareness campaign for this type of dance.
