it legally defines the limits of your land or property and all the legilities that entails like trespass laws etc.

I don't agree with fenlandfowl because the boundary fence does not really legally define where your property begins and finishes. You could have the fence in the wrong place. Only your certificate of title / title deed can establish where your real boundary is.

I believe the main functions are:

1. to mark your territory
2. to keep out intruders
3. to provide visual privacy
4. to help avoid adverse posession (adverse posession is when someone else becomes legally entitled to your land from long term uninterrupted use)
5. where applicable, to keep pets in
