My dad has the old WebTv box and I want to set up an IM account for him. Can I?

YES!
WebTV changed its Messenger service last month. Previously only MSNChat was offered. MSNChat has been discontinued and four IRC (Internet Relay Chat) services are now available to WebTV users; Starchat, AfterNet, ChatUniverse, and ChatNet.
It should be easier for WebTV to chat with computers now.

Because you are not able to download or install any programs onto a web TV, it is impossible to install Yahoo IM on a web TV. (Had one for several years). The Web TV has not hard drive in it. IT can only open web sites, not run programs. You would be able to use a chat site to talk to friends (pick a date and time and all get on line together), but you can not run or install an IM.

as long as it has internet and internet explorer is up to date and its like a real computer you can.
just go to http://messenger.yahoo.com/
make sure he has enough space on it.
