Hikari Algae Wafers are pretty good, They wont pollute the tank, break off easily and softens up nicely and are very nutricious for your pleco.

I suspect that you are simply over feeding the pelco, and your other fish. The rest of your fish only need about what they can eat in a minute. Pleco are basically scavengers. They eat algae in the tank, missed food in the gravel, dead fish, any fish that fit's in it's mouth, slow moving fish's slime coat, plants, driftwood (roughage).... Exactly what it will eat depends on the species, and the individual pelco.
Generally a pleco in a tank with a lots of light, scraps from tankmates, and little competition from other bottom feeder. Doesn't need any extra food. It's going to depend on his size and the available food in the tank. Even with a large pleco, no left overs, and little aglae. They really don't need to be fed even day. One or 2 algae wafers 2-3 times a week before lights out is all a pelco needs. You'll be able to tell if he's hungry as he'll be active cleaning the glass, and searching the gravel a lot during the day.

Plecs in general are messy fish which create a lot of waste, not to mention many get quite large. Mistake #1 which has been mentionned a number of times here is overfeeding. The usual common pleco is a vegetarian, a piece of blanched (or just microwave 10 secs) zuchini or cucumber attached to a rock so it stays at the bottom is usually eaten quite fast and when / if it starts degrading you simply have to change the piece.

RE:
Best food with least mess for Plecostomus?
I purchased sinking algae chips for my plecostomus and in one day the water was so dirty it had to be changed. What is the best brand and type of algae chips (or other food source) to give him that will allow my aquarium water to remain clean?

You're probably overfeeding because plecos are usually clean. I feed my alagaes alagae tablets once a week and shrimp pellets the next week. If your alagae is still small don't feed him everday. Feed him once a week. By the time they are done cleaning the tank they won't be able to eat much, so they poop a lot. only when they are fully grown do you feed them everyday because they will still be hungery after they clean the tank becuase their stomachs are bigger and they will starve.

This is going to sound crazy but I feed mine one green bean about once every couple weeks. You MUST wash them before dropping them into the tank to get off the unwanted residue that can harm the fish. This was recommended by the pet store and is suppost to be completely safe. My fish has grown double the size in less than six months.

It's possible that you're just feeding the fish too much. Generally, plecostomus are very clean fish.

I don't think the Pleco's food is the cause of the tank getting dirty.
I also feed my plecos Hikari Algea Tablets
