y intercept is the value that results when you put in x = 0.
x intercept is the value that results when you put in y = 0.
To find the y intercept, plug in x = 0:
y = -3(0)² - 12(0) + 7
y = 0 - 0 + 7
y = 7
To find the x intercept, plug in y = 0
0 = -3x² - 12x + 7
Using the quadratic formula:
x = [ -b ± sqrt(b² - 4ac) ] / 2a
x = [ -(-12) ± sqrt((-12)² - 4(-3)(7)) ] / 2(-3)
x = [ 12 ± sqrt(144 + 84) ] / -6
x = [ 12 ± sqrt(228) ] / -6
x = [ 12 ± 2(sqrt(57) ] / -6
So there are two x intercepts:
x = -2 ± (sqrt(57) / 3)
x ≈0.517 or x ≈ -4.517

group the variables. 3x²-4y²=12 Divide via 12 3(x²)12 - 4(y²)/12 (x²)/4 - (y²)/3 Equation: X²/4 - Y²/3 I dont understand what the x or y intercepts are, on no account knew there have been intercepts. yet the two way, the hyberbolas open sideways meaning one is going left, the different is going good. i assume it has x-intercepts? :D

The y-intercept is easy, set x = 0
y = -3 * 0 - 12 * 0 + 7
= 7
For the x-intercept, I think you're supposed to use the quadratic formula.
y = ax^2 + bx + c
a = -3
b = -12
c = 7
[-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a
= [12 +- sqrt((-12)^2 - 4*-3*7)]/(2*-3)
= [12 +- sqrt(144 + 84)] / -6
= [12 +- sqrt(228)] / -6
= [12 +- sqrt(2*2*57)] / -6
= [12 +- 2sqrt(57)]/-6
= [6 +- sqrt(57)]/-3
= -2 +- sqrt(57)/3

What is the solution of the equation when x = 0? That is the y-intercept.
The x-intercept is the point at which y = 0. In which case you are solving the quadratic equation. (Hint -- there are two x-intercepts!)
This should be a no-brainer!
