Thats about a 17 gallon aquarium. While the inch of fish per gallon of water rule isn't always a good rule to follow, in a tank this size, you are going to want smaller fish so it should be pretty accurate. I would get fish that won't grow larger than 4 inches, and I'd stick with about 15 inches of full grown fish. I'd go with a mixture of 2 species coming from cories, small schooling fish, or small gouramis. I'd get 3 or 4 cories of a smaller variety like pandas or peppered, and then six small danios (great schooling fish, constantly in motion), or 3 or 4 small cories and 4 or 5 dwarf gouramis (mostly female is best). You could also go with some smaller species of shell dwelling cichlids and a surface dweller like a butterfly fish or pencilfish.
A batch of 3 small cories and 6 zebra danios would be your easiest combination, with some great personality in the cories, and great movement in the zebras. The shell dwellers and a surface dweller would be harder, because the fish aren't as hardy, and are more aggressive, but it would also be a more unique setup.

Depends on the fish but if you want a comunity tank i would advise buying some surface swimming fish, some middle swimming fish, and some bottom feeders, this way your tank will always look good. Dont buy guppies as they dont live long and are not as hardy as people think. Live bearers are usualy short lived fish but they breed a lot. Good surface swimmers are, Hatchet fish, Butterfly fish and if you want them guppies are surface swimmers. Middle swimmers are, most tetra`s, Rainbows, platy`s, mollyies Danios. Bottom swimmers i would stick to Corydoras or other small catfish. When you buy your fish make sure you watch them for a while first, Check they are healthy and see where they like to swim in the tank and whether they are a shoaling fish. Buy two or three a week NO more or you will have trouble with your water. Good luck. p.s Never wash your filter sponge under the tap or you will kill all the good bacteria. Take a bit of tank water out and give it a quick rinse in that. (They dont need to be spotless).

I have between 30-50 tropical fish and they wont stop breeding! Mollies, guppies, a pleccie, cardinal tetra's and one surviving gourami.
We've experimented a bit with a community tank and you certainly can keep small fish together, or fish of the same size generally. So if you want average size fish then go to you fish stockist and see for fish that grow to a similar size and are compatible. Any salesperson at the pet shop would normally love to give advice (ask my husband, he spends ages asking them a million questions i often feel sorry for them).
Well, gourami grow big, you can keep them with livebearers such as mollies and guppies but they do tend to hunt down the fry.
NOw, with guppies and mollies you'll have fry once a month on average. if you dont see the fry, its cause they eat the little ones if there's not enough hiding place (like large bushy plants etc) Pleccies are useful as they keep the glass and tank nice and clean and eat the bacteria which grow off fishy poo but they'll never touch the fish (although they can get scary looking in size and variation). They're like nature's little vacuum cleaners!
Mollies are very gentle and mild mannered but some can still be nippy and boisterous. They'll nip nip and nip again so you have to ensure that the males (who wants to have sex lots) have 2-3 partners at any given time. The same applies to guppies. the males become aggressive if they dont have enough females to mate with. I'd suggest you have 6-9 fish in there of these small varieties, or perhaps 4-6 largish fish like butterfly rams, gourami, angel fish, they grow quite largish and stalk little fish like mollies little ones etc. HOpe i've told you all i know...also, mollies are very hardy, they'll survive and survive and survive some more (they mostly outlived some of our goldfish in our cold water tank) and we care for both tanks very efficiently! Lyretail mollies are beautiful, so are male guppies (their colouration) You decide!

Your tank is not really big enough for a lot of different fish.
Tetras make great 1st fish, they are hardy, beautiful and small. They are happier when there are 6 or more of them in a tank, but remember you can not add too many fish at once to a tank,

relies upon on the fish yet once you prefer a comunity tank i might propose determining to purchase some floor swimming fish, some center swimming fish, and a few backside feeders, this type your tank will consistently look good. Dont purchase guppies as they dont stay long and are not as hardy as human beings think of. stay bearers are usualy short lived fish yet they breed plenty. good floor swimmers are, Hatchet fish, Butterfly fish and in case you prefer them guppies are floor swimmers. center swimmers are, maximum tetra`s, Rainbows, platy`s, mollyies Danios. backside swimmers i might shop on with Corydoras or different small catfish. once you purchase your fish confirm you watch them for a jointly as first, verify they're healthful and notice the place they like to swim in the tank and regardless of if or no longer they seem to be a shoaling fish. purchase 2 or 3 a week not extra or you have hassle inclusive of your water. good success. p.s by no ability wash your clear out sponge below the faucet or you will kill each and all the coolest bacteria. Take somewhat tank water out and supply it a speedy rinse in that. (They dont could desire to be spotless).

I would start out with a few cheap but colorful fish so if they die, you wouldn't have wasted a lot of money, but if they live, they are a nice addition to your tank. Then you can start adding the fish to your liking gradually, just remember that you should have 1 gallon for every 1 inch of fish. Hope this helps!!

You can keep any kind of fish but try not to get ones that get really big like Carps or Catfish cuz you will have to move them into a larger tank when they get bigger. Gold fish are quite attractive but they are a bit hard to maintain especially if you are new to fish. Try some mollies or sword fish for a start. Ill tell you what. Go to your local aquarium and have a look around. If you find anything that interests you list them here on this same question and ill advice you. Will check back in a couple of days.

There are many answers to this question, but what I would certainly not do is trust any fish shop (they are all about making money) or put 'anything' in the tank.

Visit a fish forum like www.fishforums.net to get different advice, as you have many ideas to choose from.
