Should 'pro lifers' change their name to 'zygote rights activists' to avoid having to answer questions like how they support war and the death penalty?

I call it a zygote, because I realize there are stages of human development, and they have names. I also use words like 'penis' instead oh 'hoo hoo'

Why not go even further?
I, for example, believe that male masturbation should be made illegal.
It destroys THOUSANDS potential lives!
Also menstruation should be banned. That poor egg washed out with blood could have been next Einstein!

Being anti-abortion, and pro-capital punishment and supporting necessary military action are not mutually exclusive.

As for this 'zygote' BS, ask any pregnant mom what's in her womb, and she'll tell you it's a baby.

In the medical journals and books, until the late 60's, the inhabitant of the womb was called a 'baby'. Calling it a zygote or an embryo or a fetus or a mass of tissue, does not change the fact that it is a distinct human being, with it's own unique DNA, and is an innocent human life.

People who are punished with the death penalty are NOT innocent humans, but people who have done the ultimate wrong by taking someone else's life. In doing so, they forfeit their own. Because of the high regard we have for life, the punishment for wrongly taking it must also be high.

As for war, there are many justifiable reasons for going to war. Freeing millions from oppressive tyrannic governments that were brutal to their own people is a just cause. Let there be no doubt about this. Killing the people who directed, supported or enacted rapes, torture and mass murder is not a bad thing. It is the just punishment for those who did the ultimate wrong.

As a former zygote, let me answer.

At the moment of conception, a human being is formed. It looks nothing like a human being - it's microscopic! - but it is. It's not a skin cell or a toenail. It grows into a mature human being, like you or me. Those other cells do not. Those who ignore that are doing exactly what they accuse the "Bible-thumpers" of - ignoring science!

If you want to call it something else to de-humanize it, go ahead. That was the point of giving concentration camp victims tattoos of numbers - dehumanizing them. Sometimes it works.

As for your second (implied) question, I know of no one who opposes killing a human being in all cases. (Maybe Jesus, who allowed Himself to be crucified rather than to have His disciples raise a hand in violence to defend Him.) We kill humans (or let them die) all the time - war, death penalty, abortion, self-defense, medical triage, etc.

The dirty little secret is that we draw lines all the time - we balance the interest in human life against the other interests involved. FDR and Truman "participated" in the deaths of millions of humans - but the alternative would have been worse.

Some people think the unborn are worth preserving in some, or all, circumstances. Others do not. We can debate that.

But a zygote is human. Calling it something else doesn't change that. It just weakens the argument.

It's a pet peeve, from an admittedly cranky and long-winded poster.

All the best. :)

They'll never go for it. Their position is purely emotional with no legal, scientific or religious basis. Take away the 'Gerber Baby' imagery and sappy rhetoric that appeals to the less-than-bright and they would be out of business. Then, they would have to find another voiceless constituency that hasn't the option to tell them to stop using them to push their demented agenda.

I support the war.........Saddam broke UN security regulations that were placed on him after Gulf War 1.
I believe in the death penalty...........it is the best deterrent to crime.....if your dead you commit no crimes.
I am pro-life...........don't want to get pregnant shut your legs! The arguement about rape and incest.......you can have one then, but that is less than 3% of abortions.

Professional lifers belong in prison; that's why they got life in the first place. Jury of their peers decided, not some PC humanitarians.

Not too clever of a question. Did your mom consider abortion?
