It was originally launched as free software for schools, colleges and other instututions who would make use of the free service.
Everyone soon caught on and started making up bogus school names for the sign up process so they changed it to a free for all.
Maybe they've had pressure from other software companies who they deal with.

They are updating the version of AVG and will no longer be supporting in the early versions (free or paid). Because of differences in the way Vista does virus scanning, they have to change to be compatible with Vista. However, they still have a free v ersion of the new 7.5 virus scanner. I downloaded and installed it about a week ago.
So go and get it now while they are still offering it...

As far as I understand Grisoft are not stopping their free anti-virus in January next year.
What they will be stopping is support for all versions prior to the current new version.
The new version is 7.5.430. If you are using anything older than that then I would suggest that you download the new edition.
I don't think that there's any need to worry!!

I just went through AVG's parent site looking for this information. They do not have any intention of stopping their free version from what I can tell.
It may a joke/phishing or it could be you have to re-register again. Registering doesn't cost any money so it is still free but you must register at least once a year.

waalaykum assalam Nooo I had that on my old computer and it wasnt very reliable at all as an anti virus scanner. But if you wanted to you could use the trial until it runs out to test it for yourself, and if you like it you could buy it, and if not you could buy another one :) At the moment i am using Kaspersky, I used to also have norton but i wasnt that pleased with it.. I've had Kaspersky for nearly a year now, so it is going to expire sometime soon, and i will buy the same one because its reaally good :) Salaam

I also hear that it is going to close free service shortly. I can give a few links that offer free virus and spyware removers...! Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

Not as far as I am aware. Version 7.1 will expire in January and there will be no more updates. You need to download Version 7.5 from the Grisoft site. This one is still free and will have on going updates. I am running it and it is fine.
