I just found out yesterday that I am 5 weeks pregnant. I went to my GYN and am in the process of finding a OB or OBGYN to ask the questions to but i figured moms or moms-to-be would know too.

1. When do you have your first sonogram? What do you find out with that sonogram. Heartbeat/healthy?

2. During which week/month do you find out what the sex of the baby is?

3. My due date is July 21st-22nd. Are due dates that accurate this early in pregnancy?

Thanks for any SERIOUS answers!!!

Hi Honey Congratulations on the baby!!!
The first ultrasound will give you the actual due date its pretty accurate + or -. a day or so. You should have that one soon probably around 8- 12 weeks or so it checks to make sure you have a healthy baby with a heartbeat .
The second ultrasound you will have will be between 18 and 20 weeks and will make sure the baby is growing properly and you will then be able to find out what you are having (the sex of the baby)
The due date your Doctor first gives you is always based on your last menstrual period and if your periods are pretty regular can be accurate at times and may not change.
Good luck with the pregnancy and enjoy it because it goes by so fast.So take advantage of every one spoiling you.

Some OBs do sonograms on a routine basis and others only give one sonogram unless something needs to be investigated futher. The first sonogram can measure the baby, listen to heartbeat, and tell you if baby is measuring to your due date. However, sonograms are sometimes one to two weeks off either direction from your due date. The most accurate due date will be the first day of your last menstrual period. At 18-20 weeks they can tell the sex of your baby. Your OB provider should be able to provide a timeline of routine prenatal tests and visits for their practice.

CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy! You have some good questions.

The first sonogram will be at the first doctor's appt - I heard my baby's heartbeat - at 8 weeks pregnant - it was awesome!

The earliest that you can find out what sex the baby is is 16 weeks, but it's difficult that early. A lot of people have to wait until 18 or 20 weeks to find out, but, remember, it's not 100% sure until the baby is out! My doctor told me at 16 weeks that he was 99.999999% sure that it was a girl, but, I still waited until I had her to de-tag and wash all the little girl clothes I had!

Due dates are pretty accurate, but, I think only about 10% of babies are born on their due date, so just plan on having the baby +- 2 weeks from the due date. My due date was July 27th and I had her on Aug 2nd.

Good luck with everything, and make sure to enjoy what is happening during your pregnancy!

Sonogram usually comes around 17-20 weeks of pregnancy. During this time they take pictures and measure the baby's bones to assure the baby is growing properly. Checking the heart, lungs and heart beat are especially important!! Usually during the sonogram you can determine the baby's gender.
Sometimes this can change the due date but most of the time the due date is just an estimated guess anyways.

1) Most initial sonograms happen after 7-8 weeks, so you should be able to hear the heart beating. It's pretty amazing!

2) An ultrasound will happen at 18-20 weeks. This is the fun one and can determine the sex of the baby 50% of the time (depending on positioning). If it's a girl they'll have a harder time, of course!

3) As to your final question, only 3% of births happen on the actual due date. As long as you make it to week 34 baby should be fine. And honey, PRAY it comes a few weeks early! :-) Good luck and congratulations!!

You usually have your first ultrasound around 12 weeks, but it's too early to determine the sex. They can get a better idea of your due date by measuring the baby.

You find out the sex of the baby around the 18th week. My due date was extremely accurate. I had my son on my due date!
