Wasn't it already starting to crumble by the mid 70's when punk came out, a full three years before Thatcher came to power.

No it started way before her time in the sixties when anything went and drugs etc were becoming widely used. It has been compounded by the so called human rights act and the children's act. There is too much emphasis on protecting the criminal and forgetting all about the victim. There is no discipline and no respect. Maggie was very hot on law and order. Not a Thatcherite but even I can see how she was head and shoulders above the bunch we have now. This government is more corrupt and dishonest than even John Major's lot managed to be!

I never heard of anyone blaming mrs thatcher for a crumbling economy.
Everyone i ever met would say that mrs thatchers economic policies saved britain from disaster.
The late milton friedmans inspirational monetarist theories were the basis of the thatcher govt and reagan administrations economic policies. They have been adopted the world over by most successful democracies as the best way to combat inflation and unemployment.
Tony blairs government uses the exact template for his econoimc template.(How you choose to spend a countrys wealth is a diferent issue.)

Anybody who was alive and old enough to remember knows that in 1979 when Maggie was elected the UK was under the control of the unions. They(unions) were even preventing the burial of the dead.So before you listen to the rantings of socialists (New Labour) just do some research.
Think everything in the garden is rosy?.How did 'Prudence' Brown turn the 20 billion pound surplus he took over in 1997 into a deficit of 30 billion?.

Would you rather live in the socialist states of Russia with no money, or in the west with no more but the chance to work and make some! Can't stand scargill, red ken, etc. They are the greediest of them all.So selfish. Thatcher guided us on the road where tony blair etc, wants to keep us. Going forward

You could be right about the ills of today's society being down to Margaret thatcher. , but perhaps not in the way you expect.
Thacher's Britain brought prosperity to this country, it got rid of many of the old fashioned ways of doing things and brought modern Britain to life. When Blair and co took power the UK was poised to benefit from all those sad mad days in which we saw miners strike and poll tax rebellion.

Today we all benefit from the improvements to our society which resulted from those thatcher days in office.

The real problems in today's society is PC culture lack of discipline and respect,, and the ever increasing march of the doo gooders, who are degrading common sense with often stupid rules and excessive regulations and idiotic views .

the damage realy began with edward heath he was the first to betray britain to europe, Margaret thatcher increased the treachury ten fold and tony blair a thatcher student increased it even further. the evil leader will increas it even more untill we finaly and totaly collapse.we will be brought to a situation where people will be eating the flesh of their own arm to survive by the time the evil that runs this country has finished with us.

Punk was a reaction to everything in society that thatcher represented, she was the anarchist, destroying futures for the benefit of the elite few,a true deceiver making claims and promises that could not be upheld. She was the representative of a dying class system,so arrogant and ignorant that she governed under her own rules, everyone else was wrong. The Punks grew up and went into politics and so did their opinions changing the face of politics for good.A good epitaph for Punk would be that amongst other things it hammered home the last nail in the coffin of class rule.

Labour has been in power for a decade now and there is noone else now that can seriously be blamed for the disaster that they have created here.

As 'society' is not a rich-tea biscuit, I see little sense in describing it as 'crumbling'!

If you are asking whether Thatcher did enormous damage to our society in terms of destroying jobs, riding roughshod over peoples' rights, and and damaging the educational system, then I'm very clear that she did all that and more!
