My friend suggested I could use tryptophan as a substitute. Sorry, I don't know how to spell it.

a white crystalline powder, C20H23N, used to treat depression and enuresis.

Not even remotely close. Elavil (amytriptyline) is a mood affecting drug. Tryptophan is an amino acid, which is at higher concentrations in turkey and some other protiens. It has a slight tendency to make you drowsy, but shouldn't affect your mood.

Just to be safe I would suggest calling a pharmacist or talking to your doctor. I know that amytriptilyine is a medication that you must break from slowly so be careful and only do it under a doctors care.
