Hi.

Every day, my dad makes me turn off our internet modem at night. He says it is necessary to do this because it keeps us from getting hacked. Even though we turn off the computers at night, he things a hacker will get in and hack something. (LIKE WHAT?? The Router?? Yeah hackers want to hack my router. RIGHT.)
I hate when i have to go downstairs to the basment from the 3rd floor then back up to my room when all i want to do is go to sleep late at night, and in the morning i hate getting up and having to go downstairs to turn on the modem.

So please, Verify for me, that turning off the modem at night is pointless and stupid. thank you.

It is pointless and stupid. There is no way to hack a computer that is turned off. Routers are generally not susceptible to hacking at all.

However, if you have a wireless network, it is possible that your father is trying to prevent unauthorized use of your Internet connection through the wireless network. If this is the case, though, it is far better to actually take the necessary steps to increase the security features on the wireless network -- after all, those will protect you all the time, not just when the modem is off.

maximum routers do not actually have a potential on/off button, so i could say they're meant to be left on. the sole way i ought to potential my router off could be to unplug the potential source from the lower back of the router. a similar is going for my modem. It has a potential swap, besides the undeniable fact that that's disabled internally by utilising Time Warner simply by fact our telephone provider is an ingredient to the internet/modem line. No potential to the modem, no telephone connection. The modem is a pair of years old without issues, and the router is over 4 years old without issues, so it is going to not be any concern for them to run 24/7.

OK! the excuse is good, but this information is Correct! Please tell your dad, that turning off the hard drive and re-booting it on a daily basis is "shortening" the Life of the Computer. Does more damage to it then any "virus" - Tell your DAD - that the Internet Connection, you pay for 24/7 - GUARDS your computer, it does not let viruses in! He Does, when he opens mail - the easiest way to get a virus! - but that won't happen either, because when you hooked-up to your Internet Service, all the anti-viruses were installed, or you wound not be "operating" and/or "connected". Tell him - just shut off the monitor - leave the hard drive on, and set your "Microsoft" to accept it's "updates" during the night, I accept mine at 3 am. Tell your DAD - Please stop that routine, I know what I am talking about, and if he needs to be reassured, tell him to drop into any computer store and ASK! Save your money, and buy a used P3 loaded, they are under (with everything) $300. and hook-up in your room... if you can't make your dad understand, and that will stop this nonsense! Good Luck, too bad I'm not your Grandmother, I'd talk to your dad!LOL

Are you related to me? My dad used to make me do the same thing, except for that he made me turn it off anytime the computer was off. Now that I don't live with him anymore, I still shut the modem off at night because he's caused me to live in fear of computer hackers.

It is pointless unless you suck at life, then you'll get hacked even with no modem power. Or a computer. Or skills.

Actually, if it's a wireless router, there may be benefit to hacking it... after all, a free ride is a free ride...

I don't know about the nighttime part, but what's the point of protecting it at night when it is on and running during the day? It's like leaving your house and locking one of two doors, even if you lock one...the other is still open.

it is definitely unnecessary. tell your dad that as long as the computer is off there is no way to access it from outside the firewall. if he is anything like my dad though this probably will not change his mind and you will still have to do it b/c he said so...
