.. Why is it that if I sell an event ticket (e.g. a concert or sporting event) for a cost that exceeds the face value of the ticket, it is considered scalping (illegal at least in CA) but I can sell my PS3 for $5,000 on eBay (more than six times its "face value")?

Simple. Because Ticketmaster will not be getting their cut of your profits. And we all know Ticketmaster is omnipresent and omnipotent. ;)
