WW2 was fought mostly in Europe, Russia, and Asia. America tried to stay out of it, which we did for the first few years.
We were compelled to get involved for two reasons:
-Europe was completely fallen to the Nazis, and the only ally we had left fighting them was England. It was only a matter of time before they fell too, and we had to start helping them.
-Japan, who was friends with the Nazis, attacked our Navy on Pearl Harbor as a way to try to scare us out of helping England.
We deployed our entire military -- Navy, Army, Air Force. We fought the Nazis in Europe, and we fought the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean. We were losing at first, then some other places in the war started helping us. The Nazis lost a third of their soldiers in Russia, no thanks to us. And in 1945, we got nuclear technology, and decided to use it to end the war. We dropped an atomic bomb on Japan, which was so bad it forced them to stop fighting us.

The US joined several other nations and blew a lot of people up and bombed a lot of buildings and basically "won" the war. It also opened the era of nuclear weapons by dropping two atomic weapons on Japan to affect their surrender.
