5y+y+2y=8y

just add the numeric values since all of the given have the same variable, which is Y...

for the + Y, take the numeric part as 1, thus
5 + 1 + 2= 8 (affix the variable and you'll get 8y)

so simple,
5y+y+2y=?

take " y " as common in all the terms.

y(5+1+2)

add the terms which is inside the brackets.
it gives ans as y(8) i.e., 8y

so 5y+y+2y=8y

8y. When adding terms at the same power(in this case the first power), simply add the coefficients. 5 + 1 + 2 = 8

8y

These are all factors of y. Since y is common you can just add the beginning terms.

Or, you can factor out the y to get ( 5 + 1 + 2 )y = 8y

Its all the same. Good luck
