I have seen a lot of tennis rackets made from laminated wood (in the older days). I have seen them made from engineering plastics and fiberglass laminates, but the latest craze is graphite composite materials which make the rackets lighter, stronger, and generally warp free unlike the old wood versions. Stringing of the racket has pretty much remained with catgut. The graphite racket hold tension much better as well.

"Materials Evolution in Racket Sports
Up until the 1970’s, virtually everyone engaged in racket sports was using wooden rackets with leather gripped handles and natural gut strings. The introduction of aluminium and steel frames paved the way for increasingly lightweight and highly durable materials. Today most racket frames are made from light-weight graphite or graphite composites that incorporate materials such as titanium, kevlar or fibreglass, giving added levels of frame flexibility, while remaining cost effective."

fiber glass thats why when it cracks its dangerous to play with because the glass could slice your finger. and im not sure what cheap racquets are made out of but i just know there a lot more stiff and you cant really get a lot of feel with them.
