This is to say " I was born this way so I don't have a choice "........Homosexuality is the best example I can think of, science says people are born gay and don't have a choice. My question is, if sexual preference is determined before birth then what other preferences are predetermined prior to birth? favorite color, smell, football team, sport, food, drink, car, clothes and on and on.........and if it is all determined before birth do we really have free will over our lives or are we already complete with all our likes and dislikes and don't have a choice?

There are many levels of awareness or enlightenment and depending on what level we are operating from at any given moment will determine whether we are choosing from our intellect or just going along for the ride. It takes a conscience decision to educate and enlighten ourselves so that we have more choices the more informed we are. Our normal love for our own sex can get blown out of proportion when we are out of balance with our thinking or we are hurting emotionally and our defenses are lowered. Religion has messed up alot of people with their basic premises in an effort to control the masses. The fastest way to get control over anyone is to lie to them and have them believe it and be unable to prove otherwise because of poverty , birth status or such. Read, study, learn and set yourself free.

Human genetics do over ride free will. But not things like favorite smells and stuff like that. My Aunt was born with no sence of smell so she doesn't have one. People who are born blind don't have an inborn instint of a favorite color. As for homosexuality, I know some people who say they have 'always been this way', and others who say that it has been a choice due to other factor's in thier life. And I think that most people change thier 'favorites' lists all the time. Ask a child what their favorite food is, then ask them tomorrow - it could change as fast as that. So, I believe that at birth what we are given a body (our tool) to incoorperate the things we are exposed to after birth into our psychi(sp?). If we are born without sight, the way we internalize the world into our lives is very different than it would be otherwise.

As long as the mind is working correctly, human genetics can not override free will in the instance that you mentioned. Through behavior modification, people who have a predisposition to anger, alcohol abuse, etc, have learned overcome these things. If the mind is working correctly, one make a conscious choice to engage in homosexual behavior. If one is genetically inclined to like the same sex, that feeling will manifest itself into a conscious act. Just like the person who says that alcoholism is genetic; the feeling is there but one must make a conscious effort to put the drink to the mouth. Just because someone is genetically inclined towards something does not mean that it is positive thing or in the realm of normality.

I would say that genetics is the urge, free will is the manifestation of that urge. The manifestation can be changed. We always have a choice as to what we will do. It is an animal that acts based on feeling alone. As humans, we are capable of higher thought. It is that higher thought that gives us free will.

The deeper question here is do people have free will at all. Now, I'm going to take a view here that smaks of indecision, but I think it is the answer. This matter is beyond our experience, so we cannot know. In other words making a decision, and having it made for us by a combination of our biology and circumstance feel the same to us.

On a slightly different note, society is built on the presumption of free will, and it will fall apart if responsibility is not taken for individual actions. So, how relatively determined vs willful we are is not a fruitful duologue.

Free will ,karma,Cause & effect & duality are an illusion created by The Law of karma. These things serve to help us transition from the level of ignorance, through the level of law into the level of Grace. All these things you mention are but the results of Karma. Some are born with physiological conditions that are beyond their control(results of karmic actions)but there are many people who are well balanced in their sexuality who simple choose to experience homosexual or bi-sexual behavior. once a person turns to God and receives from a "realized" saint ( there are many)the blessings an baptism with spirit they have fulfilled the law and are no longer a "sinner" or subject to "law". they no longer have a Freewill but have found the true will,Gods will. love

Yes, Genetics can over ride free will, such as in the cases of homosexuality or pedophilia. Society puts restrictions on nature, and as a result, taboos are formed.

Yes we are born with character - Personality, preferences, habits etc. But you have to identify which characteristics within you may lead to your downfall and work on them. For instance, if you are aggressive in nature, you can use your aggression to kill, or to become successful within the work place. That is where choices come in.

That is not true they are all learned things. As to homosexuality I was once tyold it had something to do with as chemical imbalance of the mind. Or that you were turned away from the opposite sex by treachery.

A snowflake can push over free will.

The whole idea is manufactured and incoherent.
