Get a good virus scann program and scan your computer to include the boot sector. Also make a bootable disk and do a scan from of your c drive from the disk. When you scan are complete and your machine is virus free backup your data to CD or DVD. If you still need to format then do it at that time.
Reformatting your computer is of no use if the files that you want to keep are infected. You will just be restoring infected files back to your computer.
Only reformat if necessary.

Before I would reformat, I would try to use different anti-virus programs in an attempt to remove the virus. There are some Free virus removers on the Internet.
You can save your files on by copying them to Cd's or other media, but you might also by copying the virus, and when you place the files back on your computer, you could be placing the virus back on the reformat ed computer.
Get a good anti-virus program, and you scan the Cd's for any virus before copying them back to your computer.

You first try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus. This date may be one week or one month . You have to decide the date. The problem will be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
After running the virus scan delete all temprory internet files including off line content and also unwanted files and temp. files. Finally, carryout a defragmentation . Your system will be back to the normal...!
