We are planning to move to the USA when our two 'kids' 22 and 17 finish college and Uni (18months time). One in Fine Art/ & nterior Design the other in will be an IT Practitioner. We would like any information anyone might be willing to give about what life is like there, the people, cost of living, weather differences (apart from the obvious - more sun hopefully). Is it difficult to get work, start businesses - ANYTHING? Please don't say - look on the internet - obviously I have been doing that but having someone actually tell you IS different. We have my son's God Mother in New York but we have been considering Texas or Florida. My daughter spent two weeks in Texas recently and fell in love with the place and the people she met, so possibly Austin.........Please send any useful thought.

I live in orange county California. I love it here. It is a great place to live. Although it is very expensive to live here. A condo fetches for $600,000.00 and homes fetch for $800,000.00. You will find no better weather in all of the united states. It is November and it was a beautiful 80 degrees yesterday. Plus we have some great schools out here. We have UCLA, USC, and UCI. Plus our junior colleges are ranked some of the highest in the united states. Plus there is a lot to do out here. We have the beaches, the mountains are not too far away, we have big bear lake that is also not too far away, and LA has a great night life. I hope this helps and good luck.

My family is from Texas and it is beautiful in Austin. I love that city. It revolves around the University there. But in the summer it is hot and humid and they have pretty cold winters. But it is also a lovely place. Just so you know New York is expensive. My brother lived in Manhattan and paid $1500.00 a month for a flat which was just one room. That was over three years ago. I am sure prices have gone up. I loved New York, but it was too busy for me. I only like to visit New York.

I have lived on both the East and West coasts, and can tell you that the West coast is alot more laid-back. I would recommend moving to the Southwest, either Arizona or New Mexico, or even Texas...the weather is mostly pleasant all year round, and the job market is booming, along with the real estate market...Florida is nice also, but can be expensive...New York is nice also, but alot of bad attitudes pretty crowded (New York City), and can be VERY expensive...hope this helps

Stay in the UK. Come to visit but you have everything there right now... family, friends. Don't move someplace just because someone you know visited there for a short period of time.

If you do decide to make a move, make a list of the things you like. What is your earning capacity? What type of job do you qualify for? Do you want to move to a city or more rural location? What about climate - My 2 years experience living in the UK, - Southern UK has about the same climate as Washington State.

You have a good idea here to get ideas on places to live from those actually living in the community since the Internet is definitely going to show you something different. Plus, this is a great place for people to show how their little home shines versus other locales in USA.

California is a great place to live. Southern Cali offers more sunshine than the northern part, as the climate is always warmer there. I was born in San Francisco, but I prefer San Diego (lived there 15 years and fell in love with it). There are plenty of beaches in San Diego and plenty to do without having to spend all sorts of money (depending on what your extracurricular activities are). It is a military retirement community and is still growing, offering all sorts of arts to be enjoyed and many cultural insights.

San Diego would be a great place to start a business - you can check the local strip malls and see that they are filled with all sorts of goodies and there's sometimes space in a high traffic area. But you better grab it quickly - it goes fast! The cost of living is reasonable and lower than northern Cali, so you'll want that. If you've got money, there are plenty of rich spots to live (La Jolla, Coronado, etc.).

San Diego would be my choice. :)

America is not more fun than Britain. People here have to deal with the same day to day problems as people in the UK. On top of that people here have to pay for all healthcare as immigrants do not qualify for any government help. Your mother would need at least a Master's degree or a PhD to have a small chance of getting a job here and the visa to go with it. If she doesn't have that her only way here would be to marry a US citizen and have him sponsor both of you. It is illegal to marry a US citizen just for a visa.

Houston, TX was ok but hard to find a job. FL is warm, but not all the time. We swam 1 Christmas Eve, but a severe Nov. a few years later caused a power outage & burst pipes for days. TN is beautiful, plenty of jobs and the pay is average.
GA is very nice. AZ is great, jobs & pay are good & lots of tourist attractions.

Welcome to the USA -- Okay, I know you won't be here for a bit, but welcome nonetheless. I am from NY State so if you change your mind and decide to relocate where your son's Godmother lives, let me know and I will be happy to share all that I know.

My parents live in Florida and have for 3 decades now. So if you decide on Florida over Texas, I'll be happy to share what I know about Florida as well.
