Try right clicking on My Computer and then select Properties. That will bring up a page with several tabs. Select Hardware and then Device Manager. That will show you everything you have in your computer. Any device that has a yellow ? by it has a problem. If your DVD drive shows up in there click the + sign and see what it says. Once it gives you the type of DVD, double click on that and it will give you some more screens and I believe the top one will tell you if the device is working properly and there is a trouble shooting method listed also. Install any CD/DVD burning software like Nero in your system, and reboot your PC. Your drives will come back. Its a small software conflict. If you donot want to install CD/DVD burning software then install the latest service packs of your OS and MS Office, 90% chances are that your problem will get resolved. But the former is a 100% solution.

If it states the the driver was successful then check your registry or do a system restore to a previous date when the device was functioning.

hi,

best thing dont play,
just reinstall the os, thats the safest.

installing different drivers may crash the system or hardware.

Make sure that you have set the jumpers correctly on the device itself. Or try and connect it to a different IDE slot and see if the computer detects it that way
