I have a 30 gal freshwater tank. I have had no problems with it until a couple of days ago when I put feeder fish in the tank. I have a clown knife fish, which looks like something is eating away at his tail, and I have two blood parrot cichlids, they seem to be okay for now. Now I notice that there is tiny white worms on the glass and in the water of the tank. What can I do to save my fish and what are the worms called?

the first thing is to check the water parameters and do 10-20% water change, if you have tiny worms, best bet is parasite. you have several options here and here are few notes.

- take the sick fish and do a "saltwater" dip. that will kill the parasite on the fish. "but your tank is still sick".
- medicate you water asap, you can find several medication in the fish store like "quick cure, ..etc" any ick medication, read it very good and make sure it will safe to all of the tank creatures.
beside that, remove any carbon from you filteration before you medicate.
- increate the temp in the tank, that will increase the life cycle of parasite. "make sure that the fish can handle it"
- "if you can", isolate the sick fish in a qurantin tank. and medicate the isolated tank.

- while you medicate , don't do any water changes till the end of your medication period, then do 50% water change.
parasite can destroy your fish tank in less than 1 week, take it from me i had two occasions where i had to start from scratch.

good luck and start working asap.

That is why most people either breed their own feeder fish or quarantine them before placing them in the tank. Feeder fish aren't very nutritional anyway. The white worms sound like planaria, they are safe but are usually found in tanks that are overfed or not cleaned enough which can be causing unsafe water params. Unsafe water can cause stress and weaken immune systems so when you put in a new fish it was just too much for them to handle and that is why they now are showing signs of disease. The eating away of the tail sounds like fin/tail rot, it's usually easy to fix but you have to first fix what caused it, otherwise it can and will come back.

Feeder fish often come diseased and are rarely very healthy, and there is usually no reason to introduce them into a healthy tank - a mistake I'm sure you won't make again.
Make sure it isn't the blood parrots eating away at the ghosts tail - cichlids and knifes often make poor tankmates.

I would recommend a 25% water change, remove all the worms you can (scoop them out if you have to). You can buy a general purpose parasite medicine at almost anywhere they sell live fish and I would follow the instructions on the label. Without seeing the worms it is hard to identify what they are exactly, they may not be a parasite maybe an insect larva that has been in your house, but I would treat for parasites because they fit the description of many parasites.

This probably came for the feeder.
It's not ICK, use a bacterial killer from the Fish Store and follow instructions accurately.
Do this as soon as possible, or else you're going to have a big spread of these bad bacterias

You have an infection called ick. You need to get a treatment from your pet store to cure it. The treatment is effective and not expensive. This is a parasitic infection that is extremely common and comes in with new fish. If you don't treat then your fish will die.
