Could be a wide range of possibilities, with out an idea or hearing it can't tell ya. I am sure it's nothing to worry about, 90% of pet owners start to freak out when thier pet acts just a little out of the norm.

If it was a Hissing noise....that is normal. It is a warning sound to the person or animal disturbing the turtle.

If it is a coughing sound.....it could be an indication that the turtle may have a respiratory problem and will need to see a reptile vet right away.

If the turtle is just breathing loudly (after emerging from the water or just poking the nose above water) this also is normal. BUT at the same time you should listen for any abnormal breathing patterns.

Turtles often make noises, usually associated with breathing.

When the pull their heads in suddenly, it can be a hiss, or almost a chirp noise.

During courtship, aggression, mating, and egg laying, some turtles make a variety of noises- hisses, grunts, clucks, coughs, etc.

Ill turtles also make a wide variety of hissing, bubbling, wheezing, etc. noises. If the noise is associated with any fluids in the nose or mouth, bubbles, etc.- look for medical care advice.
