I am a teacher who directs the students in a straight (as in not musical) play. I really want to continue to learn about theater but have only found one really good sounding workshop and that is at Macomb Community College near Detroit. Has anyone attended that program or know of a program for technical theater for adults?

I have never heard of a summer workshop for technical theater ... ever!

You might consider working summer stock or take some community college courses.
My best advice would be to zero in on a skill set for each summer over the next four years. Spend one summer learning set design skills, the next in lighting, the next in sound -- it really depends on what you mean by technical theater.

Much of technical theater is not that challenging. It is certainly a sub-culture and it has it's own vocabulary yet if you are really talking about "design", then that can be a lifetime's under-taking.

Since you are a director, I'd suggest you stick with that. Get a lot more exposure, get involved in readers theater and learn more about collaboration.
