Hi Simon,

The pointy end goes up. I put three toothpicks just below the middle and set it in a small glass or vase making sure the fat end stays in the water. It takes a while to sprout, but it is fun to watch. Also, when your sprout gets to be about 8" tall, if you cut it back to about 5" it will make your plant bush out and be prettier! Flowerpeddler

The pointed part goes up and the rounded side sits in the water.

I usually grow mine in soil with the pointed part barely exposed . In a few weeks, you will see a break in the avocado seed and then a little stalk forms. It is amazing to see that.

Hope your avocado seed opens up for you. I tried the water thing with the toothpicks and it never worked for me.

I grow loads of them. Just put some soil in a plant pot and push it in with the pointy side up (leave just 1 inch showing). Another great one is just to buy a piece of fresh ginger and just push lightly into soil. Grows like wildfire!! If you have a warm place to put them, any pips, from any fruit, will grow.
