They have been conditioned not to think for themselves, but to allow those "in authority" to tell them what to think/believe. And the movies are seen as an authority.
Also, they have never been taught the art of discernment.

Because Traditionally, Witches are portrayed as villians in folk lore and fairytales. Take any three "Old World" fairytales and you will see what i mean. This even goes back to the early days of film and particularly animation. In many of the early Disney movies (based on fairytales) witches are the villians. This includes "Sleeping Beauty", "Snow White" and even later movies like "Little Mermaid".
But this stigma (In film) probally goes back to the 1600s and the witch scares in America and England (If you think the Salem Witch Trials were bad you shouls look into what was happening in England). This was a time that little was known about Wiccan beliefs, and the Holier then thou mindframe of the time. It was believed at the time (and some believe now) that witches were in leauge with the devil.
And people seem to forget that "The Wizard of Oz" features the most beloved witch of all time... Galinda. (I might have spelled it wrong)

The myths have been perpetuated since the Salem witch trials...its not just Hollywood. It's society in general. People tend to fear what they dont' understand, and staying in the mainstream is safer. If everyone else believes it, then I should because it's the "right thing" to believe.....like our other traditional and more mainstream religions. Some people just cannot open their minds and hearts to different beliefs....being brainwashed as children that their religion was the "right one". Hollywood, of course, capitalizes on this basic fear we all have of witchcraft and the like (voodooism, hoodooism, etc. - watch the movie The Skeleton Key), and as long as there is money to be made, they will continue to proliferate non-truths and exaggeration for profit.

not only that they believe everything that Hollywood shows them.
i have seen people in this forum giving Magickal advise that was direct from the script of Angel.
I have seen people use The Craft as their only source of knowlege on witchcraft. and use the names of fictional demons and gods from Charmed, The Craft, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, and many others.
they cannot seperate reality from TV. and they do not have the desire to learn nor the patience to study. they just want to believe their TV and know what they think that they know.
however the bright side is that most people are so blinded by Hollywood that it makes it very easy for the true Witches and Pagans to remain under the radar so to speak.

Throuhout history, when a new religion comes in to play, it quickly "demonizes" the old religion. In a sense running it down, and leading people to believe it's followers are evil, etc.
But how can that effect Hollywood? We are all more under the influence of Christianity more than we think.
It can take hundreds of years for the prominent religion to die out. Especially in cases where political force was used in the past.
