Although America did not declare war on Germany until 1917, she had been involved in the war from the beginning supplying the allies with weapons and supplies.
On May 2nd 1915 the British passenger liner Lusitania was sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine. 1195 passengers, including 128 Americans, lost their lives. Americans were outraged and put pressure on the government to enter the war.
Woodrow Wilson (left) campaigned for a peaceful end to the war. He appealed to both sides to try to settle the war by diplomatic means but was unsuccessful.
In February 1917, the Germans announced an unrestricted submarine warfare campaign. They planned to sink any ship that approached Britain whether it was a military ship, supply ship or passenger ship.
On April 3rd 1917, Wilson made a speech declaring that America would enter the war and restore peace to Europe.
The United States declared war on Germany on April 6th 1917. American troops joined the French and British in the summer of 1918. They were fresh and not war-weary and were invaluable in defeating the Germans.
The allied victory in November 1918 was not solely due to American involvement. Rapid advancements in weapon technology meant that by 1918 tanks and planes were commonplace.
The German commander Erich Ludendorff (right) was a brilliant military commander and had won decisive victories over Russia in 1917 that led to the Russian withdrawal from the war.
In 1918 he announced that if Germany was to win the war then the allies had to be defeated on the Western Front before the arrival of American troops.
Although his offensive was initially successful the allies held ground and eventually pushed the Germans back.
By 1918 there were strikes and demonstrations in Berlin and other cities protesting about the effects of the war on the population. The British naval blockade of German ports meant that thousands of people were starving. Socialists were waiting for the chance to seize Germany as they had in Russia. In October 1918 Ludendorff resigned and the German navy mutinied. The end was near. Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated on November 9th 1918.
On 11th November the leaders of both sides held a meeting in Ferdinand Foch's railway carriage headquarters at Compiegne.
The Armistice was signed at 6am and came into force five hours later

The Armistice was signed in the rail car on 11/11/1918, which is why some nations still celebrate Armistice day. The Treaty of Versailles almost like a war crimes trial in where the winners got together and told the losers how they were going to castrate their countries. The Allies at the end of WWI actually believed if they broke up the Ottoman, Austria-Hungry, and the German Empire they would end war forever. In the long run they so alienated the people of Germany by making them pay outrageous reparations and not allowing them but a very small defense force they simply paved the way for Hitler to come to power.

The beginning of the end of World War I began around 1917. Germany had made a decison to engage in unrestricted submarine warfare. The Arab nations, under the impetus of T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") waged a revolt against Turkey (the Ottoman Empire) and caused the fall of Baghdad and Jerusalem in 1917. Under French Marshall Ferdinand Foch, the Allies achieved greater unity in April, 1918. The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed with Russia by the Central Powers, ending Russia's involvement in March, 1918. Trotsky was behind it and possibly wanted to focus on revolution within Russia. Shortly after, the Germans were stopped just short of Paris at the second battle of the Marne, and the Allied counterattack was successful. Bulgaria, Turkey and Austria-Hungary then surrendered. After revolt broke out in Germany an armistice was signed on November 11, 1918 in Compiègne, France. The Treaty of Versailles that followed between the Allied forces and Germany attempted to settle issues such as the payment of reparations, the handing over of territory, and demilitarization of Rhineland. It also led to the establishment of the covenant of the League of Nations.
World War I resulted in the loss of a minimum of 10,000,000 lives. In additon, at least 20,000,000 people were wounded. It had radically changed the face of Europe, for example, through reformed boundaries. Many people also put their trust in the newly formed League of Nations, whether for better or worse, or for no effect at all. Warfare itself had been revolutionized.
I hope some of this information is useful.

The First world War ended when Germany could no longer effectively defeat the stranglehold of the allied forces on land and by sea. The allies not only militarily defeated Germany, but they literally starved Germany of supplies. Germany was totally unprepared for Total War - a war of attrition. Outnumbered by superior economies, Germany could not continually manufacture weapons or provide supplies to troops in the field. The German navy, which was supposed to guarantee Germany supplies from the North Sea, was no longer an effective fighting force. While Germany was able to knock Imperial Russia out of the war - Germany still could not defeat the combined economic, man power and military power of the British Empire, the United States, Japan. Key German allies Italy, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, had ceased being able to provide effective fighting forces in the field. By 1918 - German military forces alone were fighting the major battles and suffering large casualties that Germany could not replace in manpower or supplies. The failure of the last major offensive by German Generals Ludendorff and Hindenburg to break the stranglehold meant an end to German military might. To save Germany from Occupation by allied forces - and the military trial of Kaiser Wilhelm II for war crimes, Prince Max of Baden approached the allies and signed the unconditional surrender of Germany in 1918. The official end of the First World War signed at Versailles. The guns fell silent on the 11th hour of 11th November 1918 - Armistice day. The war to end all wars - all so they thought....
