Use a humane glue trap, I've seen them chew their own legs off to get out of those things. Then you get a two fold benefit, they'll have a little trouble breeding with no legs, and secondly, you can just follow the little blood trail to wherever it's wiggled its way to.

My old house was overrun with mice. We tried everything: taps, human and non-human, bait and hand-catch. They breed really fast.
The best one so far has been a simple humane trap.
Get a small garbage can (the rim reaching over a foot and a half) and place at the bottom food (many like gain, some liked uncooked noodles, some like peanut butter) and place the can where a mouse could jump in (by a table, chair, were wired are. Wait a few days. We caught well over 50 mice (no lie, really) this way!

No 1 - Catch it first (You cant be jumping around the house with a hammer, your neighbours will run away)
No 2 - Dont use a hammer
No 3 - Get a mouse trap
No 4 - You really dont want a messy house,do you?(After you use the hammmmmmmer)

Phone your local town council or environment agency. They will send out a professional for a nominal fee (around £20/$40 but ask for a quote first) who will deal with the matter promptly and in a humane way. More importantly, seeing just one mouse may be a sign that there are ALREADY more around that you cannot see - so simply killing this one might not solve the problem. A professional can eradicate them completely.

Yes a hammer would kill it. It would also make alot of mess and be pretty brutal.
Why not try and catch it? Homebase sell mouse traps that will just catch the mouse in a trap so you could set it free somewhere else. They also sell traps that can kill them with poison. Or yes the hammer if you cant be bothered but I think thats a bit cruel and it will make mess.

First off you would have to get close enough and by the time you move the fridge the mouse will have maved from all the comotion. Try a mouse trap or sticky trap under the fridge and that should work or get a cat.

Field mice are a protected species and if you kill one the RSPCA may prosecute you. Field mice do not want to be behind your fridge or skirting boards. It is probably trying to find a way out and you should leave your back door open and it will find its way home to its family and friends, who have probably already reported it missing to the mouse police. Do you want that amount of blood on your hands and hammer. Shame on you, it has enough trouble avoiding predators without you joining in and robbing an owl of its supper.

If you can catch and can cope with the mess a hammer would make, then a hammer would do well. Might be best to put some poison down and they disappear and die. Also put a trap down with a sultana on it, not cheese, and you will surely catch it and put it in the bin.
If you love animals then get a humane trap and then let it out into the garden. If he doesn't die of cold he will find it's way back into your house.

The difficult part is catching it. Once you've caught it, you can kill it any way you can think of, or just let it go far away (in the field - where field mice go).
But chances are, if you see one, there'll be others. There are never just the one mouse.

You could get a cat to catch the mouse, but then you would need to get a dog to catch the cat, which you got to catch the mouse. Then of course you'd need a goat to catch the dog, the dog to catch the cat, the cat to catch the mouse. Then you'd need a cow to catch the goat, the goat you got to catch the dog, the dog you got to catch the cat, the cat, of course to catch the mouse.....I knew an old lady who had a similar problem.....have you thought of getting a mouse trap and some cheese...lol.
