I recently, had my first Pelvic Exam. And it was complete agony.
I was in severe pain. It was a really sharp pain, and i was in tears for the whole examination.
Mum has told me, that i shouldn't be painful? Is that true?.
Why did it hurt so much?
I have to go back for further tests, to determine the cause.
Am TERRIFIED about it, because it will be agony again.
What do i do? My last results came back normal, luckily.
Please help me. If anyone has any advice please post.

Pelvic Exams suck...but shouldn't be torture.
Yes, make sure the doctor knows it was very painful, get them to confirm the correct size of equipment used. If the doc was male, you should consider changing to a female doc. They have more empathy. It is very important that YOU are comfortable with the doctor. If you aren't, change immediately, do not take no for an answer. I find medium to small sized (smaller body...smaller hands) young to middle aged female docs are best for me.
Assuming all the above is ok, mostlikely it hurt because you were very tense about your first time and tightened your muscles alot. The more you can relax the less discomfort you will feel. Practise in bed at nite. Lay in "the position" (like you are on the exam table), medium length panting sort of breath in and out your mouth from the top part of your chest. Focus on relaxing everything from the middle of your ribcage down to your toes. Think jelly, let your knees flop out. (Even the little bit of hip muscle it takes to hold your knees up when your feet are in the stirrups can make a difference. Tell them you need a nurse to help hold your legs up so you can relax, if you are so flexible that your body doesn't stay in the right position when you relax.)
Practise relaxing and practise letting your mind wander somewhere else during the process, anything to drop the stress level.
I do all of the above and still have some sharp discomfort at the point where they use the speculum to open the cervix, but it's tolerable and over quickly. Sometimes there is also some nagging discomfort afterwards too, but it will be gone the next day.
Feeling nothing up to feeling various levels of yucky discomfort or mild pain are all normal. Extreme pain that makes you cry isn't something that should happen.
oh yes, also, make sure you pee right before you go in and don't eat a lot right before either. The emptier everything is in your abdomen, the less extra pressure/pain there will be.
Everything will be ok. :)

Your mom is right, a pelvic exam should never be painful. For some women, there is a slight bit of discomfort from the speculum and from the pap smear "snip" that occurs. But painful, never.
Speak with your OBGYN about the severe pain and ask why. Perhaps he or she wasn't gentle with you? Ask your mom about trying another doctor.

Glad to hear that your results came back normal.
Maybe the doctor that examined you was a little too rough. If you had bleeding afterward, that's a definite possiblility. Maybe try seeing a new doctor on your next visit.

the worst you should experience is mild discomfort unless theres something wrong. So there must be...grit your teeth and get it solved.
