Hey buddy that thing that is leaking oil could be a number of things. It could be a front main seal which is rather expensive to fix or it could be oil lines. Best bet Have a mechanic look at it. or a cheaper way is use an engine degreaser wash all the oil and crap off ur engine then watch for where it leaks after u have cleaned the engine then I will be able to tell you more. Good Luck
PS If it is your oil filter make sure there are not two gaskets on the base plate and tighten your filter hand tight

Is it the oil filter maybe? (a cylinder about 3 inches round)

If that's it, give it a twist clockwise. Then start your car ans see if it still leaks.

Not to be a smartass, but if you don't know what that "thing" is, you probably don't have the tools and/or knowlege to attempt fixing it. Find a trustworthy mechanic. BTW, that "thing" is probably the front crankshaft seal and fixing it is no easy task.

its a harmonic balancer. what is leaking, is the front main seal. i don't know what in all is involved in replacing it, but i bet its a pain. good luck.
