A girl I know has got me a bit confused.

She used to be shy and bullied in school. Now she asserts her confidence in a strange way. She spent some time doing drugs, dating bad boys, and flaunting it in front of her parents.

I was at her house the other day, and she said to her parents in a conversation "Why cant we ask this person to just **** off"?

Now, there was an awkward silence. This is an obviously clean thinking middle class family. But theyre used to her behaving like this.

Is this passive aggression? Why? I cant quite put my finger on what her deal is.

Im trying to figure out if its tied in with her obsession with always wanting to be the one to end the conversation and leave, and her lack of response sometimes to things I say to her.

like you have said..
back in school she was "BULLIED" and "SHY"..
most probably she had taken it enough...for a girl that is shy, she does not approaches friends and neither confess to a guy that she likes,
well take this case..if the guy that the girl likes suddenly started dating with another girl and her friends don't care about her..one day she had had it.. she decides to destroy her OLD identity..so therefore she becomes another person..one that does not let herself to be bullied, one that mixes around guys..probably if any of her friends talk to her about it she would realise her problem and change...

there is where your ROLE comes in..it is YOUR job as a friend to tell her how much you like her old identity..it is YOUR job to convince her that her old self wasn't as bad as what she thinks..if you can do that, YOU are a true friend of hers..good luck

I had the same thought as sweetsome, as I was reading you: "bipolar". However not necessarily a medical case but a psychological case. I mean it is possible that through counselling therapy she could be helped, Would have to keep all options open though.
Being bullied in school can result in really major personality problems.
She obviously is in a "never again" mode, and would rather mistreat others before they get a chance to mistreat her. - and may not even be conscious of it.
Edit:
I gabve a thumbs-up to tatabear, but would add that the "old" personality might not have been the true her either.

I don't think she asserts her confidence, but she is in a defensive mode, as she was bullied. By acting like that, she is showing that she is strong.

She needs to find counseling, to help her see the line, between being rude, or being strong.

Sounds like she got a case of bipolar.
