Depends on what your asking.
By overflow, do you mean the water inside the unit that is used to clean your dishes? Or do you mean the dirty water leaving the unit to the drain?
Most dish washers have a device to shut the water off if the inside fills past a certain point.
An air gap (usually sitting on your counter near the sink) prevents drain water from the sink or garbage disposal from entering the washer by creating an air pocket.
You may not have an air gap sitting on your counter, you may have a "high loop" fastened to the under side of your counter top. Either one is fine.

the dish washer should not fill over the level of the bottom of the door, it will drain as it runs.
