The event that led up to WW2 started with Germany's annexation of the Sudetenland which they had lost at the treaty of Versailles at the end of WW1. Then the German took Czechoslovakia. Poland afraid they were next signed a defense pact with France and England. Then when Germany invaded Poland all three countries were drug into WW2. France for a brief time even invaded Germany before withdrawing, just like the French. The Pacific was a different story Japan had been at war with China all through the 30's and knocking off small island nations along the way. The Japanese attacked us on December 7, 1941 in response to our cutting off oil shipments to them. We declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941, then Germany declared war on us within a few days.

It started when Hitler got the power. First invaded Checoslovaquia and they other countries (England end France)did nothing but in September 1939 after the invasion of Poland this countries declared war to Germany.
So if by start you mean the first response, after Poland was invaded. But if you mean the first aggression then when the Checs were invaded.

The war in Europe began for the U.S. in 1939 with the fall of Warsaw in Poland, we had been involved with the U.K. as part of the lend lease to deliver arms to them prior to that. The U.S. war in the Pacific began on December 7, 1941 with the attack on Pearl Harbor.
